Firm Foundations for Year 0 and 1's

Teaching Sequence - each 'chapter' card is two weeks of learning through intentional play and explicit adult-led teaching. Children are provided with a deep introduction to mathematical concepts by exploring patterns and relationships in the teaching and in their environment. The online version is an e-book that includes all new NZ content from 11 April 2025

  • Numicon 5 is completed with the higher demand of the NZC taking the learning from the previous year developing the concepts further and deeper and additional learning.

    For students beginning with Numicon as Year 7's or 8's

    For the students are still at the old Level 1 and 2, use the Big Ideas programme as a catch-up. This will enable them to jump into Numicon 5 and onwards...
    Follow this suggested sequence beginning each week with Numicon 4, then extension into Numicon 5 and 6.  The sequence is likely to continue from Year 7 into Year 8, or for Year 8's into Year 9

    For your first year, we recommend that you follow one book and reach into the books above and below for differentiation
    At this level, you will have a wide range of ability.  Your top flyers may want to continue on their journey from previous years.
