Numicon fulfils Te Mataiaho - the New Zealand Maths Curriculum

The Numicon Approach
Being clever at maths includes understanding all the strands, not just number.
Being able to work with patterns, relationships and confidently converse in mathematical language developed in the explicit teaching, with rich tasks and a positive learning environment engages all children.
Making connections in maths and solving problems by applying rules and principles is necessary for all children to demonstrate mastery of a concept and connecting maths ideas.
For this reason, Numicon supports children to broaden their understanding, go deeper and think mathematically from Year 0.
The Curriculum clearly asks for children to investigate, explain and justify in every strand in Maths.
The Numicon Approach draws all children to work together to explore the relationships and patterns in maths. This is a conversational approach to teaching that is unique to Numicon. It allows for the class to reflect on the learning, bringing the most thought-provoking questions and answers. It provides access to all learners together - inclusive!
Maths is a language of patterns and relationships. Numicon makes this a key focus of the teaching and the learning. Words and terms are provided for the teacher along with opportunities through each week to incorporate the use of the words and terms in the conversations and activities.
Generalising in maths is the Going Deeper. Just answering the question is not beneficial to the long term understanding for the children. We want them to really know the how maths happens not just the what. Numicon is full of rich tasks!
Students record the learning in their exercise books. There are no worksheets with Numicon. Extra games, practice and problem-solving activities are available on Twinkl.

Key Features
- A spiral sequence teaching sequence throughout the year which enables children to revisit the same concepts in the different strands of maths while also supporting long-term memory strength and retrieval
- Explicit teaching with extra support for children who are struggling and extension activities for the more able children
- Rich tasks throughout enabling the connections in maths and in everyday life
- A structured approach built on mastery
- Formative assessment is built in. The teacher is cued for what to, 'look and listen for' in the lessons. Weekly assessment goals accumulate towards Milestones that are tracked throughout the year.
- Reduces teacher workload. Lesson plans are done for you. You always know what to teach, when to teach it, and how to teach it. See Samples "Jo: The Numicon teaching resources are fantastic! The Implementation Guide, along with the lessons, ensures teachers have the appropriate knowledge and tools to be able to teach lessons confidently and effectively. The Long Term Plan/Teaching Progressions gives teachers a clear progression and coverage of what to teach over the school year that fulfil the NZ Curriculum. Each lesson is structured in a systematic way and use real life experiences to which children respond well. It even gives you the questions to ask the students! Each activity clearly outlines what equipment is needed. These manipulatives give students the confidence to be able to make connections and develop in that particular skill. I highly recommend using the Numicon Teaching programme in the classroom. Your students will love it!"

FAQs
Q
"How does Numicon prepare Year 8's for high school."
A
Numicon totally supports Year 8 learners. The new curriculum has extended the learning expectations for this level, so more material has been written.
Students enjoy the learning and challenges, especially with problem-solving in Numicon Feedback from our schools using Numicon at this level indicates that the students go into the top classes at high school.
Numicon 6 aims to consolidate and maintain the students' fluency with ideas met previously, and to gain mastery of new mathematical ideas. This will enable them to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to take the artificial conditions of formal national tests/exams confidently in their stride and to be ready for the challenges they will meet in the next stage of their mathematical journey.
New concepts such as increased reading of algebraic symbols, sequences for solving problems (GEMA),Q

Q
How does Numicon support children of different abilities while exposing them to the demand of working 'at' their year level?
A
- At the beginning of the programme for each year level, there is a 'Getting Started' week of activities to familiarise the teachers and students with the manipulatives, the new lesson experience, and assessment opportunities for the teachers.
- Each week, in the 'Educational Context', there is information on how the learning for the week is built on earlier work. This provides a background that teachers may want to incorporate at the beginning of the teaching week then extend into the week they are teaching.
- Focus Activities 1 and 2 of each week of learning is always introductory in design providing access to all learners - the 'low threshold'.
- Throughout the week of teaching the students reach the year's expectations and beyond. Rich tasks, open-ended problems to solve, Going Deeper - the 'high ceiling'.
- Using the Mixed Level plans the teacher can draw on the previous year's teaching to incorporate into this year.
- See Curriculum links below
Q
"How does Numicon provide 'follow-up' for personal extension?" "Assessment?"
A
Numicon has a comprehensive 'follow-up' as Independent or paired activities where the children use the equipment to solve problems, practice their learning and record their discoveries in their quad exercise book. The Student Books - Years 4 -8 provide Practice questions to discuss and do with a partner followed by Going Deeper problem solving questions to satisfy the more able students.
The Numicon lesson plan follows the new curriculum:
1. Getting Started - Teach using the Focus Activities
2. Working - Practice using the + Activities and the Student Books for going Deeper and Extension for Phases 2 and 3
3. Connecting and Reflecting - Whole class practice and discussion
Numicon absolutely follows an explicit teaching approach – it began all this movement internationally! Read all the samples at this link.
The spiral nature of the teaching progressions allows many opportunities for students to reinforce their learning but also make the connections with all the strands in Maths. You will see this in the samples. You can read the Scope and sequence for each year here
Assessment with Numicon is mainly through a formative approach:
- Where teachers are looking and listening for students to demonstrate their understanding and also promptly correct any misconceptions or wrong thinking. They don’t have to wait for a test later in the term to discover this when it’s often too late.
- Assessment cards are provided for the students to self-assess, or the teacher can use these for summative assessment
- Explorer Progress Books provide the opportunity for the students to show their learning at the end of the week and also apply their learning in a new context.
- The students’ learning is recorded in a Student Tracker – an xl spreadsheet.
Q
"Does Numicon have clear curriculum links in the planning to incorporate into the lessons ? Are there clear files showing this as well?"
A
The Mapping Tool shows all the links. You can see it here.
Our planning documents begin with the Curriculum, then show the Numicon teaching and assessment links. See the example of Numicon 2- Year 3 below.
- The purple column is NZC,
- Sequence of teaching through the year- Calculations (operations),
- Teaching sequence through the week,

Asking staff to engage with and learn what, for many, is an entirely different approach to teaching maths from what they have experienced in their entire careers, is a big endeavour. For some teachers, giving them a great resource and saying ‘go for it’ is enough. For many, that’s not enough.
As leaders, you know about all the complexities and nuances of affecting change in a way that positively impacts on student achievement. We are absolutely buzzing that Numicon has been chosen as one of the Ministry’s funded resources, because we know with certainty that, in the hands of skilled teachers, it accelerates achievement.
We are committed to helping schools realise this acceleration. We provide a range of support options from our expert facilitators to help build the skills of teachers in not just using Numicon, but in the theory and practice of structured mathematics through a concrete/ pictorial/ abstract approach. This is also the emphasis of the new curriculum which we can unpack and support you to implement it.
The schools which get the most out of Numicon, in our experience, procure in-depth PLD across 1-2 years with our facilitators. Other, less in-depth, support options include teacher-only days, a series of staff meetings, maths leadership development, one-to-one modelling, coaching and mentoring, teacher-aide workshops, etc.
Our team is available to discuss your specific needs and arrange bespoke PLD for your school based on those needs. We can create a plan to raise staff capabilities and ultimately student outcomes in Maths with your school.
