Maths is the language of relationships and patterns.
The Numicon shapes and patterns illustrate relationships and patterns of numbers and what we do with them, so clearly.
Numicon is based upon three key interconnected aspects of doing Mathematics:
Communicating Mathematically, Exploring Relationships and Generalising.
Integrated thinking skills are employed throughout the programme as part of communicating mathematically with oneself, with others and by illustrating to solve problems.
Numicon utilises the environment to teach maths in everyday contexts and provides activities across the curriculum demonstrating the value and use of maths to children at every level. Maths activities are applied in everyday life contexts.
Numicon is ideally suited to use in any setting.
The Numicon Approach is very much influenced by the writings of Stern, Montessori, Gattegno, Bruner and Derek Haylock, Jerome Bruner and the process of learning.
Jerome Bruner encouraged learning in a spiral approach.
